George is a recent new patient at Rock Bridge Animal Hospital, and right away we noticed his unique features and his sweet, calm demeanor. He was adopted from the Central Missouri Humane Society the day after he was returned by some previous adopters. His owner noted that she can't imagine why anyone would return him because he is the most perfect boy. George loves to go for long walks, nap under a big pile of blankets, give kisses and sit on a warm lap. He is very patient and playful with their 2 young children, 3 and 5 years. He also enjoys to play with their cat Barney who likes to scare him by jumping out at him from behind furniture. George is a great example of the beauty and love that can come from giving an animal a second chance through adoption!
Animal shelters nation-wide struggle with overcrowding. ASPCA estimates that 6.5 million dogs and cats* are entering shelters annually, while only about 4.1 million of those pets are being adopted. APPA reports that only 23% of dogs in the U.S. are obtained from animal shelters and humane societies, while 34% of dogs are obtained from a breeder. While euthanasia of healthy adoptable pets in animal shelters has decreased recently, it is still a prevalent issue as there continues to be a pet overpopulation crisis.
