Boudica is a female domestic shorthair cat that presented to our clinic in May to have 
her left hind limb amputated following an unfortunate accident with a car. Boudica is thought to be a stray around 1 year of age that happened to have some caring people see what happened to her and take action.
The day of the incident, her current foster family had spotted her struggling to cross the road right after it happened. They quickly pulled over and managed to herd her under their parked car. Noticing an obvious and open fracture in her leg, she was rushed to the Emergency Clinic at the University.
Boudica spent 2 1/2 days at the University Veterinary Hospital, where they stabilized her and prescribed pain medications. At the University, they found multiple pelvic fractures as well as the obvious fracture to the tibia/fibula (shin) bone. Due to the severity of the leg fracture, the doctors determined amputation as the best option for Boudica. For the amputation, her foster family decided to bring her to our hospital.
She was transferred to our hospital where Dr. Forbes performed an exam to ensure Boudica was still in good enough shape for the procedure. Boudica remained stable the whole time she was under anesthesia, and Dr. Forbes administered her first round of vaccinations once the procedure was completed. Boudica recovered well and we sent her home that evening with pain management and instructions to restrict her activity as much as possible for the next 6-8 weeks.
Boudica returned to our clinic two weeks later for a medical progress examination and
to booster her vaccinations to get her on a yearly schedule. Dr. Sappington performed this exam and found that Boudica’s incision was healing very well and her overall health was excellent. We refilled pain medications to continue keeping her comfortable while the pelvic fractures heal.
Boudica has lived up to the name given her by her foster family. She is a “Celtic warrior queen!” Since Boudica was a stray, she is still looking for a forever home.
